Huawei Pura X

An unusual format, but useful for reading and gaming

What would it look like if a book and a flip phone were combined? This would result in the Huawei Pura X, a new smartphone that was recently announced in China. It features a 6.3-inch display with a 16:10 ratio on the inside, and on the outside houses three cameras and a 3.5-inch square display.

Huawei designed the new phone to be rotated a lot when opened and used as a regular foldable, in portrait then landscape format. But when folded, the hinge should sit on the side. Opened, the Pura X measures 143.2 mm high and 91.7 mm wide, making it short but much wider than any smartphone. Once folded, its dimensions become 91.7 mm by 74.3 mm, which is still unusual. Its width reminds me of the BlackBerry Passport and how it was viewed by many journalists.

Both sides have LTPO OLED panels with a refresh rate of 120 Hz. The foldable screen supports a maximum brightness of 2,500 nits. We don’t know if the external screen is fully operational like Moto RAZR, but it has a large number of compatible apps for sure.

An oddity that makes us remember the times with Nokia experiments is the fact that the Pura X is meant to take calls in its folded state. The headset is right next to the LED flash, meaning the external screen is positioned towards the user’s face when taking calls. It’s also absolutely not bad for selfies.

The Huawei Pura X has a 50 MP wide camera with f/1.6 aperture, RYYB and OIS sensor, and a 40 MP f/2.2 ultrawide camera with another RYYB sensor camera. There is also an 8 MP tele shooter with 3.5x optical zoom. Next to them is the spectral image sensor that debuted in the Mate 70 Pro series. For video calls, Huawei added a 10MP camera inside the Pura X in a main screen punch.

The Pura X has a 4,720 mAh battery divided into two cells. Supports 66W wired and 40W wireless charging. The Pura X also comes with heat dissipation elements, including a graphite plate, capable of providing a thermal conductivity of 2000 W/mk.

The operating system is HarmonyOS 5.0, which is Huawei’s internal operating system, built on its own core but still with Android support.

The hardware platform it runs on is Kirin 9020, a platform developed by HiSilicon, Huawei’s chipset division. The chip has an 8-core processor, a 2.5 GHz Taishan Big core, three 2.15 GHz Taishan Mid, and four 1.53 GHz Cortex-A510 cores.

The GPU in Kirin 9020 is Maleoon 920, another in-house product. It operates at up to 840 MHz, but we have no details on the architecture or the number of processing units. While CPU performance is not far from Qualcomm’s flagship chips, the GPU still acts as a mid-range unit.

The foldable has a regular version and a collector’s edition. The latter has two special models of exclusive cases and is available with 16 GB of RAM.

Huawei Pura X has three regular colors – Black, White, Silver – along with Pattern Green and Pattern Red Collector edition options. Prices start at ~ $1.035/€955 for the basic 12/256 GB version and go to ~ $1.105/€1.020 for 12/512 GB. We also have approx. $1,240/€1,145 for the 16/512 GB version and $1,380/€1,270 in the most powerful variant with 16 GB RAM and 1 TB storage.

The phone went on sale in China on March 21st. There is no information at the moment whether it will reach international markets or the views of influencers are still awaited.
